ISO 45001:2018 is ISO's most recent standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S). It is synergistic with OSHA requirements, and can help organizations ensure worker safety and well-being.

Course Objectives:

• The business as well as the ethical and legal case for workplace safety; all will help gain buy-in from relevant interested parties including management and the workforce.

• Key clauses of the ISO 45001:2018 standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and supporting tools and techniques

• Synergies between the clauses of ISO 45001, OSHA requirements, 5S, job safety analysis, and stakeholder-initiated near miss reports

• Importance of workforce participation and engagement, including for example in workplace

Why Should You Attend:

ISO 45001 provides an OH&S management system that goes beyond mere compliance with OSHA regulations to deliver optimum results. The safest workplaces pay half as much for worker's compensation insurance as the least safe workplaces as shown by experience modification ratings (EMRs) of 0.75 to 1.50 respectively. ISO 45001 also supports the requirements of OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) which offers additional benefits. "The average VPP worksite has a Days Away Restricted or Transferred (DART) case rate of 52% below the average for its industry."

Course Outline:

• ISO 45001 is structured similarly to ISO 9001 and other newer ISO standards that use Annex SL, but it is relatively unique in terms of its clauses that require workforce participation. Clauses such as 5.4, "Consultation and participation of workers," reinforce throughout the standard the need to involve workers in the OH&S management system because they are often in the best position to notice potential safety risks.

• Workplace safety committees help deploy the requirements of ISO 45001 and offer numerous other benefits as well. The presentation includes an overview of safety committees and references to resources including PATHS (Pennsylvania Training for Health and Safety).

• Henry Ford, who ran one of the safest workplaces in the country, identified twelve accident root causes that are as valid today as they were 100 years ago. All but one (inappropriate clothing, which relies on compliance with safety rules) can be neutralized or removed with the 5S workplace organization method, clauses of ISO 9001 regarding infrastructure and environment for operations, and Ford's "can't rather than don't" safety principle.

• Job safety analysis, which is synergistic with standard work, helps identify potential hazards for corrective and preventive action.

• The hiyari hatto ("experience of almost accident situation") is a worker initiated near miss report that supports worker participation in proactive elimination of hazards.

• Clause 7.4, Communication, is particularly important as HAZCOM (Hazards Communication) was in second place behind fall protection for OSHA violations in 2017.

• Clauses on Operation (8) include attention to management of change (MOC) which means that anything new or changed can create unforeseen risks, as well as emergency preparedness.

• The "can't rather than don't" safety principle means (for example) that, instead of telling workers, "Don't put your hand in the punch press when it closes" (an administrative control that cost thousands of hands and fingers annually), you design the press so the worker can't put a hand into it when it closes. This is an engineering control that makes the accident impossible.

• An organization with a functioning OH&S system is probably 90% of the way to meeting the requirements of ISO 45001:2018.

• Appendix (handout only, not covered in the webinar due to time constraints): an overview of the Army's Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment process. This offers additional guidance.
